Deuteronomy Chapter 8
Moses futher exhorts to obedience.
8:1 All the instruction which I
urge y'all this day shall y'all observe to do, that y'all may live,
and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD sware to your fathers.
8:2 And you will remember all the way which the LORD your God
led y'all these forty years in the wilderness, to humble y'all,
[and] to prove y'all, to know what [was] in your heart, whether
you would keep his commandments, or not.
8:3 And he humbled y'all, and suffered y'all to hunger, and fed
y'all with manna, which you knew not, neither did your fathers
know ; that he might make y'all know that man does not live by
bread only, but by every [word] that proceeds out of the mouth
of the LORD does man live.
8:4 Your clothes do not wear upon y'all, neither did your foot
swell, these forty years.
8:5 You will also consider in your heart, that, as a man
disciplines his son, [so] the LORD your God disciplines y'all.
8:6 Therefore you will keep the commandments of the LORD your
God, to walk in his ways, and to revere him.
8:7 For the LORD your God brings y'all into a good land, a land
of brooks of water, of fountains and depths that spring out of
valleys and hills ;
8:8 A land of wheat, and barley, and vines, and fig trees, and
pomegranates ; a land of olive trees, and honey ;
8:9 A land wherein you will eat bread without scarceness, you
will not lack any [thing] in it; a land whose stones [are] iron,
and out of whose hills you may dig brass.
8:10 When you have eaten and are full, then you will bless the
LORD your God for the good land which he has given y'all.
8:11 Beware that you forget not the LORD your God, in not keeping
his commandments, and his laws, and his rules, which I instruct y'all this day
8:12 Unless [when] you have eaten and are full, and have built
goodly houses, and dwelt [therein];
8:13 And [when] your herds and your flocks multiply, and your silver
and your gold is multiplied, and all that you have is multiplied
;
8:14 Then your heart be lifted up, and you forget the LORD your
God, which brought y'all forth out of the land of Egypt, from the
house of bondage ;
8:15 Who led y'all through that great and terrible wilderness,
[wherein were] fiery serpents, and scorpions, and drought, where
[there was] no water ; who brought y'all forth water out of the
rock of flint ;
8:16 Who fed y'all in the wilderness with manna, which your fathers
knew not, that he might humble y'all, and that he might prove
y'all, to do y'all good at your latter end;
8:17 And you say in your heart, My power and the might of [mine] hand has gotten me this wealth.
8:18 But you will remember the LORD your God for [it is] he that
gives y'all power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware to your fathers, as [it is] this day.
8:19 And it shall be, if you do at all forget the LORD your God,
and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I
testify against you this day that y'all shall certainly perish.
8:20 As the nations which the LORD destroys before your face, so shall y'all perish ; because y'all would not be obedient to the
voice of the LORD your God.
