Chapter 37

Joseph's dreams

37:1 And Jacob lived in the land of his father's travels, in the land of Canaan.
37:2 These [are] the generations of Jacob. Joseph, [being] seventeen years old, was feeding the flock with his brothers ; with the sons of Bilhah, and with the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives and Joseph came with an evil report to their father.
37:3 Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he [was] the son of his old age and he made him a robe of [reaching to] the feet.
37:4 And when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably to him.
37:5 And Joseph dreamed a dream, and he told [it] his brothers and they hated him still more.
37:6 And he said to them, Now hear this dream which I have dreamed
37:7 For, behold, we [were] binding sheaves in the field, and, behold, my sheaf rose up, and stood
upright; and, behold, your sheaves came around, and bowed to my sheaf.
37:8 And his brothers said to him, Shall you indeed reign over us? Or shall you really rule over us? And they hated him still more for his dreams, and for his words.
37:9 And he dreamed still another dream, and told it his brothers, and said, Behold, I have dreamed another dream. And, behold, the sun and the moon and the eleven stars were bowing themselves to me.
37:10 And he told [it] to his father, and to his brothers and his father rebuked him, and said to him, What [is] this dream that you have dreamed ? Shall I and your mother and your brothers indeed come to bow down ourselves to the earth to you?
37:11 And his brothers were jealous of him; but his father paid attention to the word.
37:12 And his brothers went to feed their father's flock in Shechem.
37:13 And Israel said to Joseph, Are not your brothers feeding [the flocks] in Shechem ? Come, and I will send you to them. And he said to him, Here [am I].
37:14 And he said to him, Go, see the welfare of your brothers, and the welfare of the flocks ; and bring word back to me. So he sent him out of the valley of Hebron, and he came to Shechem.
37:15 And a man found him, and, behold, [he was] wandering in the field and the man asked him, saying, What do you seek?
37:16 And he said, I seek my brothers. Please tell me, where they are feeding [their flocks].
37:17 And the man said, They have left here; for I heard them say, Let us go to Dothan. And Joseph went after his brothers, and found them in Dothan.

Conspiracy of Joseph's brothers

37:18 And when they saw him from a distance. And before he came near to them, they conspired against him to kill him.
37:19 And they said one to another, Behold, this master of dreams is coming.
37:20 Come now, and let us kill him, and throw him into one of the pits, and we will say, Some evil beast has devoured him and we shall see what will become of his dreams.
37:21 And Reuben heard, and [he] delivered him from out of their hands ; and said, Let us not kill him.
And Reuben said to them, Shed no blood, [but] throw him into this pit that [is] in the desert, but do not lay a hand on him; so that he might deliver him from their hands, to return him to his father.
37:23 And it came to pass, when Joseph came to his brothers, that they stripped Joseph out of his coat, [his] long coat [reaching] to his feet;
37:24 And they took him, and threw him into a pit and the pit [was] empty, [there was] no water in it.
37:25 And they sat down to eat bread and they lifted up their eyes and looked, and, behold, a company of Ishmeelites came from Gilead with their camels bearing spices and balsam gum and sticky gum, going to carry [it] down to Egypt.
37:26 And Judah said to his brothers, What profit [is it] if we kill our brother, and conceal his blood ?

Joseph sold to Ishmeelites

37:27 Come, and let us sell him to the Ishmeelites, do not let our hand be on him; for he [is] our brother [and] our flesh. And his brothers listened.
37:28 Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen ; and they drew up Joseph and took [him] out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty [pieces] of silver and they brought Joseph into Egypt.
37:29 And Reuben returned to the pit ; and, behold, Joseph [was] not in the pit ; and he tore his clothes.
37:30 And he returned to his brothers, and said, The child [is] not; and I, where shall I go?
37:31 And they took Joseph's coat, and killed a ram of the goats, and dipped the long coat in the blood ;
37:32 And they sent the long coat [reaching to] the feet , and they took [it] to their father ; and said, We have found this. Now look, [is] it your son's long coat?
37:33 And he knew it, and said, [It is] my son's long coat! An evil beast has devoured him; Joseph is without doubt torn in pieces.
37:34 And Jacob tore his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his loins, and mourned for his son many days.
37:35 And all his sons and all his daughters rose up to comfort him; but he refused to be comforted ; and he said, For I will go down to Sheol mourning my son. And his father wept for him.

Joseph sold into Egypt

37:36 And the Midianites sold him into Egypt to Potiphar, an officer of Pharaoh's, the cheif of the executioners.
