Chapter 39

Joseph's advancement

39:1 And Joseph was brought down to Egypt ; and Potiphar, an eunuch of Pharaoh, cheif of the executioners, an Egyptian, bought him from the hands of the Ishmeelites, which had brought him down there.
39:2 And Yehovah was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man ; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian.
39:3 And his master saw that Yehovah [was] with him, and that Yehovah made all that he did to prosper in his hand.
39:4 And Joseph found grace in his sight, and he served him and he made him overseer over his house, and he gave him all that he owened into his hand.
39:5 And it came about from the time [that] he had made him overseer in his house, and over all that he had, that Yehovah blessed the Egyptian's house for Joseph's sake ; and the blessing of Yehovah was upon all that he had in the house, and in the field.
39:6 And he left all that he owned in Joseph's hand ; and he did not know anything he had, except the bread which he did eat. And Joseph was beautiful in form , and beautiful of appearance.

Joseph resists temptation

39:7 And after these things happened, that his master's wife cast her eyes upon Joseph ; and she said, Lie with me.
39:8 But he refused, and said to his master's wife, Behold, my master does not know what [is] with me in the house, and all that he owns he has given into my hand.
39:9 [There is] none greater in this house than I; neither has he kept back any thing from me but you, because you [are] his wife how then can I do this great evil, and sin against Eloheem ?
39:10 And it happened, as she spoke to Joseph day by day, that he did not listen to her, to lie beside her to be with her.
39:11 And it happened about [on] this day, that [Joseph] went into the house to do his work. And none of the men of the house [were] there in the house.
39:12 And she caught him by his robe, saying, Lie with m! And he left his robe in her hand, and fled outside.
39:13 And it happened, when she saw that he had left his robe in her hand, and fled outside,
39:14 That she called to the men of her house, and spoke to them, saying, See, he has brought in an Hebrew to us to mock us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I cried with a loud voice
39:15 And it came to pass, when he heard that I raised my voice and cried, that he left his robe with me, and fled, and went outside.
39:16 And she laid up his robe by her, until his master came home.
39:17 And she spoke these same words to him, saying, The Hebrew slave, which you have brought in to us, came in in to me to, at mock me
39:18 And it happened, as I lifted up my voice and cried, that he left his robe with me, and fled outside.
39:19 And it happened, when his master heard the words of his wife, which she spoke to him, saying, According tp these words your slave did to me; that his anger glowed.

Joseph is cast into prison

39:20 And Joseph's master took him, and put him into the prison, the place where the king's prisoners [were] bound and he was there in the prison.
39:21 But Yehovah was with Joseph, and shown him mercy, and gave him favor in the sight of the warden of the prison.
39:22 And the warden of the prison gave to Joseph's hand all the prisoners that [were] in the prison; and all which they did there, he was doing.
39:23 The warden of the prison looked not to anything in his hand ; because Yehovah [was] with him , and [that] which he did, Yehovah made [it] prosper.
