Obedience of the Rechabites


35:1 The word which came to Jeremiahיִרְמְיָהוּ

35:4 And I brought them into the house of YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

35:5 And I set before the sons of the house of the Rechabites (meaning uttermost part) pots full of wine, and cups, and I said to them, Drink y’all wine.
35:6 But they said, We will drink no wine: because Jonadab (or Jehonadab) the son of Rechab our father commanded us, saying, y’all shall drink no wine, or your sons forever:
35:7 Or shall y’all build house, or sow seed, or plant vineyard, or have any: but all your days y’all shall live in tents; that y’all may live many days in the land where y’all are strangers.
35:8 So have we obeyed the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab (meaning rider) our father in all that he has commanded us, to drink no wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, or our daughters;
35:9 Or to build houses for us to live in: or have we vineyard, or field, or seed:
35:10 But we have lived in tents, and have obeyed, and done according to all that Jonadab our father commanded us.
35:11 But it so happened, when Nebuchadnezzarנְבוּכַדְנֶאצַּר

35:14 The words of Jonadab (meaning YAHWEH is willing) the son of Rechab (meaning rider), that he commanded his sons not to drink wine, are performed; because to this day they drink none, but obey their father’s commandment: however I have spoken to you, getting up early and speaking; but y’all didn’t listened to me.
35:15 I have also sent to you all my servants the prophets, getting up early and sending them, saying, Y’all return now every man from his evil pathמִדַּרְכּוֹ

35:16 Because the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have performed the commandment of their father, which he commanded them; but these people haven’t listened to me:
