Contrast the Upright and the Wicked


17:1 A dry piece of bread and peace with it [is] betterטוֹב

17:2 An intelligent servant will rule over a shameful son, and will share the inheritance among the brothers.

17:5 Whoever mocks the poor insults his Maker: and whoever rejoices at calamities won’t be unpunished.
17:6 Grandchildren [are] the crown of the aged; and the glory of children [are] their parents.
17:7 Excessive speech isn’t becoming of a fool: much less do lying lips in a leader.
17:8 To its giver, a bribe is like a charming stone: where ever it turns, it prospers.
17:9 He who conceals an offense seeks love; but he who repeats a matter alienates friends.
17:10 A reprimand penetrates an understanding man than one hundred stripes to a fool.

17:16 Why is there money in the hand of a fool to buy wisdom, seeing as he hasn’t the heart to learn?
17:17 A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.
17:18 A man who lacks [an understanding] will give his handshake to be a cosigner for his friend.

17:21 He that fathers a fool has does it to his sorrow: and the father of a fool won’t rejoice.
