Amos Chapter 5

A lamentation for Israel


5:1 Y‘all hear this word that I
recite over you, in lamentation, O house of Israel.
5:2 The virgin of Israel has fallen; she won’t rise again : she is forsaken on her land; there is no one to lift her up.
5:3 For so says Adonaiאֲדֹנָי

; The city that goes out by a thousand shall have one hundred left, and that which goes out by one hundred shall ten left, in the house of Israel.

An exhortation to repentance


5:4 For so says YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

5:5 But don’t seek Bethelבֵּית אֵל

5:7 Y’all who turn judgment to wormwood, and lay righteousness on the ground,
5:8 He that made the Pleiades and Orion, and turns the shadow of death into the morning, and He makes the day dark with night: who calls for the waters of the sea, and pours them out on the face of the earth: YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

5:9 That strengthens the robbed one over the strong, so that the robbed one shall prevail over the fortress.
5:10 Those hate him that admonishes by the gate, and they despise him that speaks purely.
5:11 So because you trample on the poor, and y’all take tribute
of grain from him: y’all have built houses of hewn stone, but y’all shall not live in them; y’all have planted delightful vineyards, but y’all shall not drink wine from them.
5:12 Because I know your many transgressions and your mighty sins: afflicting the righteous, taking of a bribe, and they turning aside the poor in the gate.
5:13 So the wise man keeps silence in that time; for it is the time of evil.
5:14 Seek good, and not evil, that y’all may live: and so YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

5:21 I hate, I despise your feast days, and I won’t smell your solemn assemblies.
5:22 Though y’all offer Me burnt offerings and your grain offerings, I won’t accept them: nor will I regard the peaceשָׁלוֹם

5:24 But let judgment roll down like waters, and righteousness like a mighty stream.
5:25 Have y’all offered sacrifices to Me and offerings in the wilderness forty years, O house of Israel?
5:26 But y’all have borne the tabernacle of your king and Chiun your images, and the Kochav your god, which y’all made for yourselves.
5:27 So I will exile you beyond Damascus, says YAHWEH יְהֹוָה
