Nahum Chapter 3

The ruins of Nineveh


3:1 Woe to the bloody city! All of it is a lie and full of robbery; the prey doesn’t depart [from it];
3:2 The crack of a whip, and the sound of the rattling of a wheel, and of the galloping horse, and bounding chariot.
3:3 The horseman lifts up flashing sword and the lightning of the spear: and many are killed, and heaps of dead bodies; and there is none end to the bodies; they stumble on their dead bodies:
3:4 Because of the many of the harlotries of the well favored harlot, the practitioner of witchcraft, who sells nations through her harlotries, and families by her witchcraft.

God’s irresistible power

3:5 See, I [am] against you, says YAHWEH יְהֹוָה
Hebrew Yəhōwā, one vocalization of the Tetragrammaton יהוה‎ (YHWH), the proper name of the God of Israel in the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament. of hostsצְבָאוֹת
Transliteration:ṣāḇā’ Pronunciation: tsaw-baw’ From the Hebrew root word translated “hosts” is tzva’ which is a term that describes “military units.” They have specific functions to carry out in a military campaign. ; and I will pull up your skirts over your face, and I will show the nations your nakedness, and the kingdoms your shame.
3:6 And I will throw abominable filth on you, and make you disgusting; I will make you like a gazing stock.
3:7 And it will so happen, that all those that look on you will move away from you, and say, Nineveh is laid waste: who will weep for her? From where will I seek comforters for you?
3:8 Are you better than No-Amon, that sits by the rivers,with water surrounding it, whose rampart was the sea, and whose wall of the sea?
3:9 Ethiopia and Egyptמִצְרַיִם

were her strength, and it was endless; Put and Lubim were your helpers.
3:10 Yet each of them [went] into exile into captivity: her young children also were dashed in pieces at the head of every street: and they cast lots for her noble men, and all her great men were bound in chains.
3:11 You too will be drunk: you will become unknown, you also will seek a fortress from the enemy.
3:12 All your fortresses will be [like] fig trees with the first-ripe figs: if they are shaken, they will even fall into the mouth of the eater.
3:13 Look, your people [is] like
women among you: the gates of your land have been wide opened to your enemies: the fire will devour your city gates.
3:14 Draw water for the siege 
, fortify your fortresses: go into clay, and tread the mortar, make the brick mold strong.
3:15 There will the fire consume you; the sword will cut you down, it will eat consume you like the locust larvae: make yourself many as the larvae, multiply yourself like the locusts.
3:16 You had more merchants than the stars of in the heavensהַשָּׁמַיִם

: the locust larvae spread out, and fly away.
3:17 Your princes are like the locusts, and your officials [are] a the swarm of locusts, that camp in the hedges in the cold day, when the sun rises they move away, and the place
where they are isn’t known .
3:18 Your shepherds are asleep, O king of Assyria: your your mighty men are at rest: your people are scattered on the mountains, and no one gathers them.
3:19 There is no healing of your fracture; your wound is grievous: all who hear the report about you will clap the hands over you: for on whom hasn’t your wickedness continually
passed?
