Isaiah Chapter 34

God’s Judgement on the nations


34:1 Come close, O nations גּוֹיִם
Hebrew Noun: Common Masculine Plural Absolute (in the sense of massing); a foreign nation; hence, a Gentile; also (figuratively) a troop of animals, or a flight of locusts:—the Gentiles, the heathen, the nations, the people. For more info click here

34:2 Because YAHWEH יְהֹוָה‎

is enraged against all the nationsעַל־כָּל־הַגּוֹיִם

, and furious against all their armies: He has completely destroyed them, He has handed them over to slaughter.

34:3 Their slain will be thrown out, and their stench will rise from their corpses, the mountains will melt from their blood.
34:4 And all the hostצְבָא

will dissolve, and the heavensהַשָּׁמַיִם

will be rolled up like a scroll: and all their hostצְבָאָם

will shrivel, like the grape-leaf falls from the vine, or like a shriveled fig from the fig tree.

34:5 Because my sword has drunk its fill in the heavensבַשָּׁמַיִם

: see, it will descend on Edomאֱדוֹם
was an ancient kingdom in Transjordan, located between Moab to the northeast, the Arabah to the west, and the Arabian Desert to the south and east. Most of its former territory is now divided between present-day southern Israel and Jordan. Edom appears in written sources relating to the late Bronze Age and to the Iron Age in the Levant also another name for Esau the brother of Jacob and Esua’s descendants
to judge them, the people I have doomed to destruction.

34:6 The sword of YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

has a sacrifice in Bozrah (meaning sheepfold or fortress), and a great slaughter in the land of Edomאֱדוֹם

34:7 And the wild oxen will fall with them, and young steers with the mighty bulls; and their land will be soaked with blood, and their soil enriched with fat.
34:8 Because it is the day of vengeance for YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

34:9 And its (Edom) streams will be turned into tar, and its dust into sulfur, and its land will become burning tar.
34:10 that will not be quenched night or day; its smoke will rise forever: from generation to generation it will lie in waste; no one will pass through it ever again.

Desolation of all enemies


34:11 But the hawk and the bittern will occupy it; the eagle owls too and the raven will live in it: and he will draw against it a line of emptiness, and plumb bobs of void.
34:12 Their noblemen will call out to the kingdom, but none will be there, and all her leaders will become nothingness.
34:13 Its palaces will sprout weeds, thorns and thistles in its fortresses : it will become a lair for jackals, and a place for ostriches.
34:14 Wildcats and hyenas will meet there; and billy-goats call to each other, there Lilith* The name of a female demon (Rashi) or a nocturnal bird (Ibn Ezra). – From the Artscroll English Tanach too will relax; the screech owl also will rest there, and find for rest for herself.
34:15 There will the bittern and lay and hatch her eggs, gathering them together under her shadow: there will the vultures also be gathered, each one with its mate.

34:17 And he has cast the lot for them, his hand measured out their shares: they will possess it forever, from generation to generation will they live in it.
