God’s judgement on Jerusalem


29:1 Woe to Ariel, Ariel אֲרִיאֵל

29:2 Yet I will bring distress Arielאֲרִיאֵל

29:3 And I will camp against you like a ring, and will lay siege against you with a siege-work, and I will raise barriers against you.
29:4You will sink down, and will speak out of the ground, and your voice will be low out of the dust, and your voice will be, like a ghost out of the ground, and your voice will peep (or chirp) out of the dust.
29:5 Then your multitude of strangers will be like fine dust, and the multitude of the terrible ones will be like passing chaff: yea, it will be in an instant surprisingly.
29:6 You will be remembered by YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

with thunder, and with earthquake, and loud noise, with storm and whirlwind, and the flame of consuming fire.
29:7 Like a dream,
a vision of the night will be, the multitude of all the nations that fight against Ariel אֲרִיאֵל

29:8 It will be like when a hungry man dreams, and, see, he is eating; but he wakes up, and his soulנַפְשׁוֹ

is empty: or like when a thirsty man dreams he drinks; but he wakes up, and he is faint, and his soul וְנַפְשׁוֹ

is still thirsty: so will the multitude of all the nations be, that fight against Mount Zion.

The foolishness of Jerusalem’s residents


29:9 Delay yourselves, and marvel; they have been completely blinded: they were drunk, but not from wine; they staggered, but not from strong drink.
29:10 Because YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

of deep sleep on you, and He has closed your eyes: He has covered the [false] prophets and your rulers, the seers.
29:11 And the vision of all has become for you like the words of a book that is sealed, which men deliver to someone that is educated, saying, Please read this: and he says, I can’t; because it is sealed:
29:12 And the book is delivered to him who isn’t educated, saying, Please read this: and he says, I’m not educated.
29:13 YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

said, Because as this people draw close to Me with their mouth, and with their lips have honored Me, but have distanced their heart far from me, and their fear of Me is taught like routine learning of human commandments:
29:14 So, see, I will continue to do a more wonders among this people, even a wonder upon wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men will be lost, and the understanding of their sages will be hidden.
29:15 Woe unto them that try to hide in the depths to conceal their purpose from YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

, and their deeds are [done] in the dark, and they say, Who sees us? and who knows of us?
29:16 Will your rebelliousness be regarded like the potter’s clay? Or a molded thing say of its molder, He doesn’t understand?
29:17 Shall not Lebanon in just little while become a farmland, and the farmland will be considered like a forest?

A promise of better things


29:18 On that day will the deaf hear the words of the book, and out of their gloom and darkness the eyes of the blind shall see.
29:19 The meek also will increase their gladness in YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

29:20 because the oppressor is no more, and the scoffer is eliminated, and all who remain wicked will be cut down:
29:21 those who with a word cause a man to sin, and set a trap for the one who judges at the gate, and mislead the righteous with falsehood.
