Jonah sent to Nineveh

1:1 Now the word of YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

came to Jonah the son of Amittai, saying,
1:2 Get up, go to Nineveh, that great city, and cry against it; for their wickedness is ascended before Me.

Jonah’s flight to Tarshish


1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from before YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

, and went down to Joppa; and [he] found a ship bound for Tarshish: so he paid its fare , and boarded it to travel with them to Tarshish from the before YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

The storm

1:4 But YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

threw a great wind toward the sea, and there was a mighty storm in the sea, so that the ship was thought to be broken.
1:5 Then the sailors were frighttened, and cried every man to his god, and threw out the utensils that were in the ship into the sea, to lighten it for them. But Jonah had gone down into the hold of the ship; and he lay down, and was sound asleep.
1:6 So the ship’s master came to him, and said to him, What [is it] with you, O sound sleeper? Get up, cry out to your God, if so be that Elohimאֱלֹהִים

will notice us, that we won’t perish.
1:7 And they said each other, Come, and let us cast lots, that we may know determine whose account this calamity is upon us. So they cast lots, and the lot fell on Jonah.
1:8 Then said they to him, Please tell us, for what reason this evil is on us; What is your trade? And where do come you from ? What is your country? and of what people [are] you?
1:9 And he said to them, I am a Hebrewעבר

1:11 Then said they to him, What shall we do to you, that the sea may be calm for us? for the sea grows stormier.
1:12 And he said to them, Pick me up, and throw me out into the sea; so will the sea be calm for you: for I know  it is
because of me that great storm is on you .
1:13 But the men rowed hard to bring it to the shore; but they couldn’t: for the sea was growing stormier on them.
1:14 And they cried to YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

had prepared a great fish to swallow up Jonah. And Jonah was in the belly of the fish three days and three nights
