Joshua Chapter 2

Spies sent to Jericho

2:1 And Joshua יְהוֹשֻׁעַ
Yəhōšuaʿ,(/ˈdʒɒʃuə/), lit. ‘Yahweh is salvation’) also known as Yehoshua. Yeshua or Y’shua (ישוע; with vowel pointing Hebrew: יֵשׁוּעַ, romanized: Yēšūaʿ) was a common alternative form of the name Yehoshua (Hebrew: יְהוֹשֻׁעַ, romanized: Yəhōšūaʿ, lit. ’Joshua’) in later books of the Hebrew Bible and among Jews of the Second Temple period. The name corresponds to the Greek spelling Iesous (Ἰησοῦς), from which, through the Latin IESVS/Iesus, comes the English spelling Jesus meaning salvation.
the son of Nun sent out of Shittim two men to spy secretly, saying, Go view the land, and Jerichoיְרִיחוֹ

. And they went, and came into an harlot’s house, named Rahab, and lay down there.

, saying, See, men have come in here tonight of the sons of Israel to search out the land.

sent to Rahab, saying, Bring out the men who have come in to you, which are entered into your house. They be come in to search out all the land.

Rahab conceals spies


2:4 And the woman took the two men, and hid them, and said, This way the men came in to me, but I did not from where they [were]
2:5 And it so happened [about the time] the gate was to be shut at dark, that the men went out. I don’t know where they have gone. You go after them and hurry; for ya’ll may overtake them.
2:6 But she had made them go up on the roof, and hid them in the stalks of flax, which she had arranged upon the roof.
2:7 And the men pursued after them the way to Jordan by the fords. And as soon as they which pursued after them were gone out, they shut the gate.
2:8 And before they had laid down, she came up to them on the roof ;
2:9 And she said to the men, I know that YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

has given you the land, and that your terror has fallen on us, and that all the inhabitants of the land melted before you.

dried up the water of the Red sea before you, as ya’ll were going out of Egypt ; also that which ya’ll have done to the two kings of the Amorites, who [were] on beyond the Jordan, to Sihon and Og, whom ya’ll destroyed.
2:11 And we have heard [these things], our hearts melted, and there not still rises spirit in any man, because of you for YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

2:12 Now please, swear to me by YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

2:13 And [that] ya’ll will keep alive my father, and my mother, and my brothers, and my sisters, and all that they [own], and deliver our souls from death.

2:15 Then she let them down by a rope through the window for her house [was] upon the town wall, and she lived in the wall.
2:16 And she said to them, Go to the mountain, unless the pursuers come on you. And hide yourselves there three days, until the pursuers return and afterward may ya’ll go your way.
2:17 And the men said to her, We [will be] guiltless from this your oath which you have made us swear.
2:18 Look, [when] we come into the land, you shall bind this scarlet thread of line in the window which you did let us down by and you shall bring your father, and your mother, and your brothers, and all your father’s household, to the house.
2:19 And it shall be, [that] anyone who shall go outside from the doors of your house, his blood [shall be] on his head, and we [will be] innocent. And anyone who is with you in the house, his blood [shall be] on our head, if any hand be is on him.
2:20 But if you reveal this business of ours, then we will be guiltless from your oath which you have made us swear.
2:21 And she said, According to your words, so [be] it. And she sent them away, and they departed and she tied the scarlet line in the window.
2:22 And they went, and came to the mountain, and stayed there three days, until the pursuers had returned and the pursuers searched in all the way, but did not find [them].
2:23 And the two men returned, and came down from the mountain, and crossed over, and came to Joshua יְהוֹשֻׁעַ
