Esther Chapter 2

A choice of virgins


2:1 After these things, when the anger of King Ahasuerus had calmed down, he remembered Vashti, and what she had done, and what had been decreedחֲנֻכָּא

against her*Though the text says that Ahasuerus remembered Vashti in the morning (presumably with some regret) the next verse moves swiftly to the search for a new queen, leaving us to ask: What actually happened to Vashti? … a majority of the adult rabbinic commentators agree that Vashti was quietly taken out and beheaded. (The word for “decreed” (nigzar) is identical to the word for “cut off.”) The silence of the text is deafening, and readers are left to wonder. – From the website My Jewish Learning.
2:2 Then the king’s servants
said, Let fair young maidens be sought for the king:
2:3 The king should appoint officers in all the provinces of the kingdom to gather all the young, good-looking maidens to the house for the harem, in Shushan (or Susa meaning lily) the capital, under the custody of Hegai (or Hege  meaning eunuch), the king’s eunuch, who guardian of the women; and let their cosmetics be given to them.
2:4 Then let the young woman who pleases the king be reign instead of Vashti. And the matter pleased the king; and he did so.
2:5 There was a Jewish man in  Shushan the capital  whose name [was] Mordecaiמָרְדְּכַי

2:6 Who had been exiled from Jerusalem יְרוּשָׁלַם

2:7 And he brought up Hadassah (meaning myrtle), that is, Estherאֶסְתֵּר

2:9 And the maiden pleased him and won his favor; and he hurriedly prepared her cosmetics and her portion of food, and with seven maidens from the king’s palace: and he moved her and her maidens to the best place in the harem.

2:12 Now when each maiden’s turn had come to go into King Ahasuerus, after being twelve months under the regulations for the women,
since this was the regular period of their beautifying, six months with oil of myrrh and six months with spices and ointments for women.
2:13 and when the girl went in to the king she was given whatever she asked for to take with her from the harem to the king’s palace.

2:15 When the turn came for

more than all the women, and she found more favor and kindness in his sight more than all the other maidens; so that he set the royal crown on her head, and made her queen instead of Vashti.
2:18 Then the king made a great banquet to all his officers and his servants, it was Estherאֶסְתֵּר
