Isaiah Chapter 33

A prayer for help

33:1 Woe to you pillager, and you haven’t been pillaged; Traitor who hasn’t been betrayed! when you finish pillaging, you will be pillaged; and when you end your treachery, they will be treacherous with you.
33:2 O YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

, show us favor; we have waited for You: be their arm every morning,
also our salvation in the time of trouble.
33:3 At the sound of the turmoil the people wondered; from Your the lifting up of yourself nationsגּוֹיִם

33:4 And your plunder will be gathered as if stripped by the caterpillar: they leap over it like a swarm of locusts.
33:5 YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

is exalted; for he lives on high: he has filled Zion צִיּוֹן

with judgment and righteousness.
33:6 And wisdom and knowledge shall be the stability of your times, and strength of salvation: the fear of YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

33:7 Look, their herald cries out outside: the messengersמַלְאָכִים

33:8 The public roads are deserted, there are no travelers! He has voided the covenant, he despised the cities, he regards no man.
33:9 The earth mourns and languishes: Lebanon and withers away: Sharon is like a wildernessמִדְבָּר

33:10 Now will I rise, says YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

33:11 Y’all shall conceive stubble, y’all shall give birth to straw* Isaiah tells the Assyrians that they have conceived and given birth to plans that are as worthless as stubble and straw (Radak) and that their own spirit, i.e., plans would come back against them. – From the Artscroll English Tanach: your breath, like fire, will devour you.
33:12 Nations will be as if burned to lime: like thorns cut up to burn in the fire.

The godly are privileged


33:13 Y’all that are far off, hear what I have done; and, y’all that are near, acknowledge my might.
33:14 The sinners in Zionצִיּוֹן

are afraid; trembling has seized the godless. Who among us shall dwell with the devouring fire? who of us can live with everlasting burning?
33:15 One who walks with righteousness, and speaks straight; who rejects extortionate profit and waves away from holding a bribe, that stopped his ears from hearing of bloodshed* He doesn’t let unsubstantiated talk to incite him to bloodshed (Radak). – From the Artscroll English Tanach, and shuts his eyes from seeing evil;
33:16 He shall live on high: his refuge a fortress among the cliffs: bread shall be granted; his water assured.
33:17 Your eyes shall see the king in His beauty: they shall see a land that stretches far away.
33:18 Your heart shall meditate in dread. Where is the one who counts? Where is the the one who weighs? Where is the one who counts the towers?
33:19 You will not see a questionable people, the whose speech is too difficult to understand; of a mocking tongue, that you can’t comprehend.
33:20 Look on Zionצִיּוֹן

33:21 Because there YAHWEH יְהֹוָה

our Mighty One [it will be like] a place of broad rivers and streams; But no boat with oars will go there, and a mighty ship can’t cross it.

is our King; He will save us.
33:23 Your ropes hang loose; they couldn’t strengthen their mast, they couldn’t spread the sail: then great plunder will be divided; [even] the lame will get part of the booty.
33:24 And the inhabitant [of Jerusalem] will not say, I’m sick: the people that live there will be forgiven their sin.
