Job Chapter 3

Jacob Jordaens - Abraham Grapheus as Job

Job curses the day he was born

3:1 After this
Job opened his mouth, and cursed his birthday.
3:2 And Job spoke, and said,
3:3 Let the day perish [which] I was born, and the night in [which] said, A man child has been conceived.
3:4 Let that day be darkness; don’t let Eloahאֱלוֹהַּ
Transliteration:’ĕlôha Pronunciation:el-o’-ah El appears in this form (El transl. God) rarely (shortened) אֱלֹהַּ ʼĕlôahh; probably prolonged (emphatic); a deity or the Deity:—God, god click here
look on it from above, or let the light shine on it.
3:5 Let darkness and the shadow of death seize on it. Let a cloud dwell on it. Let all that blackens of the day terrify it.
3:6 As [for] that night, let darkness seize it. Don’t let it be joined to the days of the year, Don’t let it come into the number of the months.
3:7 See, let that night be silent, let no joyful voice come in it.
3:8 Let those curse it that curse the day, those ready to stir up Leviathan.
3:9 Let the stars of the twilight be dark; let it wait for light, but have none. Don’t let it see the eyelids of the dawn.
3:10 Because it didn’t shut up the doors of my mother’s womb, or hide misery from my eyes.
3:11 Why didn’t I die from the womb? come from the womb and give up the ghost?
3:12 Why did the knees go before me? or why the breasts that I should suck?
3:13 For now would I have lain down and been quiet, I would have slept: then I would have been at rest,
3:14 With kings and wise men of the earth, who built ruins for themselves;
3:15 Or with princes that had gold, who filled their houses with silver:
3:16 Or as an hidden miscarriage I wouldn’t have been; like infants who never saw light.
3:17 There the wicked cease from turmoil; and there the weary are at rest.
3:18 There the prisoners rest together; they don’t hear the voice of the slave driver.
3:19 The small and great he is there; and the slave is free from his master.

Job’s complaint life

3:20 Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul;
3:21 Who is waiting for death, but it doesn’t come; and they dig for it more than [for] treasures;
3:22 They are rejoicing to euphoria, and are glad, when they find the grave?
3:23 To a man whose way is hidden, Eloahאֱלוֹהַּ

has made a hedge around him?
3:24 For my sighing comes before I eat, and my groanings are poured out like the waters.
3:25 For the dreadful thing I dreaded has come on me, and that which I feared of is come to me.
3:26 I am not at ease, nor had I rest, nor am I quiet; yet turmoil comes.
