Job’s honor turned to contempt
30:1 But now those that are younger than I laughed at me, whose fathers I would have loathed to have set with the dogs of my flock.
30:2 Also what might the strength of their hands profit me, had vanished with old age?
30:3 They were lonely with want and hunger; those who gnaw the dry ground [that was] recently ravaged and wasted.
30:4 [those] plucking mallowsמַלּוּחַ
mallûwach, mal-loo’-akah Althaea is a genus of herbaceous perennial plants native to Europe, North Africa and western Asia. It includes Althaea officinalis, also known as the marshmallow plant, where the fluffy confection got its name. They are found on the banks of rivers and in salt marshes, preferring moist, sandy soils. For more info click here off the bushes, and broom-plant roots for their meat.
30:5 They are driven out from among men, (they shouted against them like after a thief;)
30:6 To live in the cliffs of the valleys, in caves of the earth, and in the rocks.
30:7 Among the bushes they brayed; under the weeds they were huddled together.
30:8 They were sons of fools, yes, sons without honor: they were flogged out of the land.
30:9 And now I am their song, yes, I am their byword.
30:10 They despise me, distance themselves from me, and don’t with hold spitting in my face.
30:11 Because He has loosened His bow string, and afflicted me, they have also thrown off the bridle in my presence.
30:12 On [my] right hand the youth rise up; they dismiss my steps, and they raise their ways of destruction against me.
30:13 They tear down my path, they profit my ruin, they have no support.
30:14 They come on me like a wide breaking [of waves]: in the devastation they rolled themselves on me.
Job’s prosperity becomes calamity
30:15 Terrors are turned on me: they pursue my soul like the wind: and my deliverance passes over like a cloud.
30:16 And now my soul is poured out within me; the days of affliction have seized me.
30:17 The night pierced my bones: and my nerves take no rest.
30:18 By the great force of my disease is my garment changed: it chokes me like the collar of my coat.
30:19 [He has] thrown me into the clay, and I have become like dust and ashes.
30:20 I cry to You, and You don’t answer me: I stand up, and you don’t recognize me.
30:21 You have become cruel to me: with Your strong hand You hate me.
30:22 You lift me up to the wind; You cause me to ride on [it], and You melt my substance.
30:23 Because I know that You will return me to death, and to the house designated for all living.
30:24 Indeed He won’t stretch out his hand to the garbage heap, though they cry for help in their misfortune.
30:25 Didn’t I weep for him that was in trouble? wasn’t my soul grieved for the poor?
30:26 When I looked for good, then evil came: and when I waited for light, then darkness came .
30:27 My bowels boiled, and didn’t rest: the days of affliction stopped me.
30:28 I go in mourning without the sun: I stood up, and I cried out in the congregation.
30:29 I am a brother to jackals, and a companion to the daughters of unclean birds.
30:30 My skin is black on me, and my bones are dried out from heat.
30:31 My harp also is turned to mourning, and my flute into the voice of those that weep.
