Jewish Marriage (A Halakhic Ethic)

The Husband has ten essential obligations. Briefly, they are as follows:

  1. to sustain his wife
  2. to provide adequate clothing
  3. to provide conjugal visitation
  4. to fulfill the essential ketuvah obligations
  5. to pay her medical bills
  6. to redeem her if she is kidnapped
  7. upon her death, to ensure her proper burial, assuming the expenses for the same
  8. to ensure that she will be sustained from his estate and live in his dwelling should he predecease her
  9. to provide for the maintenance of her daughters, in the event of his death, until they reach maturity or marry and
  10. to ensure the right of her sons to her ketuvah settlement, after her passing, over and above the inheritance they would share with brothers from the husband’s subsequent marriage.
