Job Chapter 31

Job makes a protestation of his integrity in doing

31:1 I made a covenant with my eyes; how then could I look on a maiden?
31:2 For what is the portion of Eloahאֱלוֹהַּ

on high?
31:3 Isn’t it destruction to the unrighteous? and a strange punishment to the workers of iniquity?
31:4 Doesn’t He see my ways, and count all my steps?
31:5 If I have walked with vanity, or if my foot has hurried to deceit;
31:6 Let me be weighed in a just balance that Eloahאֱלוֹהַּ

may know my integrity.
31:7 If my step has turned aside out of the way, or my heart walked after my eyes, and if any blot has stuck to my hands;
31:8 Then let me sow, and let another eat;  let my produce be rooted out.
31:9 If my heart have been enticed by a woman, or if I have laid wait at my neighbor’s door;
31:10 Then let my wife grindטָחַן

to another, and let others crouch over her.
31:11 Because this is a shameful plan; and it is an iniquity [for] the judges.
31:12 For it [is] a fire that consumes to the Place of Ruin, and would root out all my profit.
31:13 If I did despise the cause of my male slave or of my slavegirl, when they contended with me;
31:14 What then shall I do when EL אֵל

rises up? When He would attend to me, what shall I answer him?
31:15 Didn’t he that made me in the womb make him too? and didn’t One prepare us in the womb?
31:16 If I have withheld the
desire of the poor, or have caused the eyes of the widow to cease;
31:17 Or have eaten my morsel alone, and the orphan hasn’t eaten it;
31:18 (For from my youth he grew up with me like with a father, and I have guided her from my mother’s womb;)
31:19 If I have seen any perish for lack of clothing, or any poor without covering;
31:20 If his loins have not blessed me, and if he were not warmed with the fleece of my sheep;
31:21 If I have lifted up my hand against the orphan, when I watched
in the gate like my help :
31:22 Then let my arm fall from my shoulder blade, and my arm be broken from the elbow.
31:23 For trouble from EL אֵל

[is] a dread to me, and because of his excellency I could not overcome.
31:24 If I have made gold my hope, or have said to the fine gold, you are my confidence;
31:25 If I rejoiced because my wealth [was] great, or because my hand had gotten much;
31:26 If I saw the light when it shined, or the moon walking in brightness;
31:27 And my heart was secretly enticed, or my mouth has kissed my hand:
31:28 This also were an iniquity for the judges: for I would have denied  EL אֵל

above.
31:29 If I rejoice at the ruin of him that hated me, or stirred up when evil found him:
31:30 Neither have I suffered my mouth to sin by asking a curse to his soul.
31:31 If the men of my tent didn’t say, Oh that we had of his meat! we can’t be satisfied.
31:32 The stranger didn’t pass the night in the street: for I opened my doors to the traveler.
31:33 If I covered my transgressions like Adam, by hiding my iniquity in my bosom:
31:34 let me fear before a great multitude, and let the hatred of families terrify me, that I kept silence, and didn’t go out of the door?
31:35 Oh that one would hear me! See, my longing Let Shaddaiשַׁדַּי

answer me, and that my adversary had written a book.
31:36 Surely I would take it on my shoulder, and bind it [like] a crown to me.
31:37 I would tell Him the number of my steps. Like a prince would I go near to Him.
31:38 If my land cry against me, or its furrows also weep;
31:39 If I have eaten the fruits of it without silver, or have caused the owners of it to lose their life:
31:40 Let thorns grow instead of wheat, and weed instead of barley. The words of Job are ended.
