Genesis Chapter 47

Israel presented to Pharaoh

47:1 Then Josephיוֹסֵף

came in and told Pharaoh, and said, My father and my brothers, and their flocks, and their herds, and all that they have, are come out of the land of Canaan ; and, see, they [are] in the land of Goshenאֶרֶץ גֹּשֶׁן
ʾEreṣ Gōšen) It is believed to have been located in the eastern Nile Delta, lower Egypt; perhaps at or near Avaris, the seat of power of the Hyksos kings.Gosen

47:2 And he took some of his brothers, five men, and presented them to Pharaoh.
47:3 And Pharaoh said to his brothers, What [is] your occupation ? And they said to Pharaoh, Your servants [are] shepherds, both we, [and] also our fathers.
47:4 They said to Pharaoh, We have come in to stay in the land ; because your servants have no pasture for their flocks ; for the famine [is] heavy in the land of Canaan. And now, please, let your servants live in the land of Goshenאֶרֶץ גֹּשֶׁן

47:5 And Pharaoh spoke to Josephיוֹסֵף

, saying, Your father and your brothers have come in to you
47:6 The land of Egypt [is] before you; cause your father and brothers to live in the best of the land ; let them live in the land of Goshenאֶרֶץ גֹּשֶׁן

and if you know [any] men of ability among them, then make them chiefs over my livestock.

47:8 And Pharaoh said to Jacobיַעֲקֹב

said to Pharaoh, The days of the years of my camps [are] one hundred and thirty years. Few and evil have the days of the years of my life been, and haven’t reached to the days of the years of the life of my fathers in the days of their camps.
47:10 And Jacobיַעֲקֹב

blessed Pharaoh, and went out from before Pharaoh.

Israel settles in Goshen


47:11 And Josephיוֹסֵף

placed his father and his brothers, and gave them a place in the land of Egypt, in the best of the land, in the land of Rameses, like Pharaoh had commanded.
47:12 And Josephיוֹסֵף

nourished his father, and his brothers, and all his father’s household, with bread, according to [their] families.
47:13 And [there was] no bread in all the land ; for the famine [was] exceedingly severe. And the land of Egypt and [all] the land of Canaan exhausted by from the famine.
47:14 And Josephיוֹסֵף

gathered up all the money that was found in the land of Egypt, and in the land of Canaan, for the grain which they bought and Josephיוֹסֵף

brought the money to Pharaoh’s house.

Money failed


47:15 And when money failed from the land of Egypt, and from the land of Canaan, all the Egyptians came to Josephיוֹסֵף

, and said, Give us bread for why should we die in your presence ? For the money failed.
47:16 And Josephיוֹסֵף

said, Give your livestock ; and I will give you for your livestock, if money has failed.
47:17 And they brought their livestock to Josephיוֹסֵף

gave them bread for horses, and for the flocks, and for the livestock of the herds, and for the asses and he fed them with bread for all their livestock for that year.
47:18 When that year was ended, they came to him the second year, and said to him, We will can’t hide from my lord that our money and the herds of animals have failed [going]to my lord; Nothing is left before lord, but our bodies, and our lands
47:19 Why should we die before your eyes, both we and our land ? Buy us and our land for bread, and we and our land will be slaves to Pharaoh and give seed so that we may live, and not die, that the land be not desolate.
47:20 And Josephיוֹסֵף

bought all the land of Egypt for Pharaoh ; for the Egyptians sold every man his field, because the famine was severe on them so the land became Pharaoh’s.
47:21 And as for the people, he removed them to cities from [one] end of the borders of Egypt even to the [other] end.
47:22 Only the land of the priests he didn’t buy; because the priests had a portion [assigned to them] by Pharaoh, and they usually ate their portion which Pharaoh gave to them for this reason they did not sell their land.
47:23 Then Josephיוֹסֵף

said to the people, Look, I have bought you and your land today, See [here is] seed for you, and you sow the land.
47:24 And it shall be as you gather, that you shall give the fifth [part] to Pharaoh, and four parts shall be yours, for seed of the field, and for your food, and for them of your households, and for food for your little ones.
47:25 And they said, You have saved our lives let us find favor in the eyes of my lord, and we will be Pharaoh’s slaves.
47:26 And Josephיוֹסֵף

made it a law over the land of Egypt to this day, [that] Pharaoh should have the fifth [part]; except the land of the priests only, [which] didn’t become Pharaoh’s.
47:27 And Israel lived in the land of Egypt, in the country of Goshen ; and they had owned it, and fruitful, and multiplied exceedingly.

, and said to him, If now I have found favor in your eyes. Please put, your hand under my thigh, and do kindness and truth with me; Please do not bury me in Egypt
47:30 But I will lie with my fathers, and you shall carry me out of Egypt, and bury me in their burying place. And he said, I will do as you have said.
47:31 And he said, Swear to me. And he swore to him. And Israel bowed himself on the bed’s head.
